A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
