Child of Former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma Denies Terror-Related Allegations as Court Case Starts
The offspring of ex- South African President Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the start of her court case in the port city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over statements she published on social media four years ago during violent demonstrations in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.
A seven-day period of chaos in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and arson, resulted in at least 300 individuals killed and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of inciting this turmoil and is charged with accusations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.
History of the Legal Matter
The demonstrations were focused in the regions of Gauteng and KZN and followed the previous president's apprehension for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an investigation into accusations of graft while he was holding office.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always denied the allegations against her, with her legal representative earlier labelling the prosecution's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently stated the allegations against her were an effort to settle political grievances with her parent after he started his own party and ran against the ANC.
Backing and Case Arguments
This was supported by the foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the ex-leader and his relatives.
A handful of supporters from her political organization, the political party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the proof presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and does not have substantial evidence for a guilty verdict.
