How brutal is the world of governance. Survey that cabinet table: all members is grappling with exceptionally challenging portfolios lacking the resources to do what they know is needed.

What they were handed was even more ruinous than anticipated: they were handed explosive situations, deceptive pitfalls and gaping holes. Leaving the European Union is emerging as more economically devastating than predicted, now losing the exchequer £80bn each year.

The Challenges Accumulating

They are blighted by bad luck: the Trump administration arrived during their watch. What greater disaster than a jail staff member freeing a rejected refugee sexual predator? Small boat arrivals feel incessant.

An ill-advised internal party vote currently was destined to give the Prime Minister a setback. The minimal electoral backing at the Caerphilly Senedd byelection might not even be their nadir.

They expect criticism, but they have feelings. Typically, the Health Secretary boldly states what everyone observes: that there is "deep disillusionment in this country at the moment" and "a growing sense of despair about whether anyone is capable of turning this country round".

Voter Perception Puzzles

Yet, even so, the present hostile state of popular sentiment is puzzling and worrying. The Prime Minister is the most disliked prime minister ever. Really?

He embodies a honorable, committed person of noble purposes, without undue arrogance or vanity. Compare that with Boris Johnson, the short-lived PM, or the relaxed confidence of the former Conservative leader, all with so little to explain their overconfidence.

Governing Difficulties

But, say the people, the current PM is poorer. As prime minister, he lacks charisma, observers note: more significantly, he lacks governing flexibility, creative thinking or understanding of public sentiment.

The party erred regarding reductions to retirees and individuals with special needs, contrasted with spending increases in other areas. Unclear about their core constituency, ministers have permitted good policies unheralded, from working rights to green investment, new towns and training opportunities for the next generation.

Governing Philosophy

Too many key consultants persist in thinking right-wing constituencies needs wooing, when almost twice as many voters have shifted progressive since the government formed. Polling guru the renowned analyst advises the party to stop chasing populist constituency: they've gone.

The Prime Minister is underperforming; this cannot be disputed when surveys indicate no individual might bounce back from these unplumbed depths.

But in the uncharted waters of significant fluctuation, history may be no guide. The Prime Minister rescued Labour from the period following Corbyn state of despair that history said couldn't be fixed in four years.

Potential Scenarios

Might a different politician do better, or have we reached a virtually unmanageable, insatiable public state of mind? Any government may be dismissed equally quickly after taking office, despite overwhelming support, except if it comes bearing quick fixes bearing untold bounty for underfunded government departments and cash-strapped families.

Expectedly, anxiety among MPs will make discussion about replacing the leader rife if the spring local elections go as poorly as forecast – or, some suggest, earlier.

Future Directions

Here's ministers' paradox: The party's sole opportunity resides in hopelessness. Assume they will be overwhelmed anyway, so use this massive majority for four more years to follow their natural left-leaning values: make radical tax reforms, increasing government income.

Prepare for opposition future elections, so implement all policies immediately. Forget opinion polls and public consultations; allow citizens to observe genuine commitment. The sole method to regain public trust is to implement openly what they consider most right and fair.

The Chancellor appropriately labels Reform "the primary risk" to national identity. While Conservatives largely align with Reform, a voting agreement of particular nature approaches.

Labour's duty is to do whatever it takes to prevent it. Prepare for coalition, be acceptable to allied groups when party affiliations matters less than the essential limit against an electoral threat unseen in contemporary politics.

That's a purpose to drive out despair.
