McLaren Racing Attributes Crash to Competitors for Team-Mate Crash
One tire detaches from the car of Lando Norris after he crashed into team-mate Piastri at the opening of the United States Grand Prix short race.
McLaren Formula 1 bosses Brown and Andrea Stella attributed competitors for the crash between Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
Piastri, ahead of his teammate in the championship by 22 points, bounced into his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with the Hulkenberg.
The collision took both team drivers out of the race, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.
Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Crash
Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, told broadcasters that some of the driving at the start was "amateur hour", stating: "Obviously Hulkenberg drove into Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."
McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella added: "The reaction is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the possibility to compete."
"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of expertise fail to act with necessary care. Go to the first corner, make sure you don't damage competitors and carry on."
The team clarified that Stella was mentioning both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.
Differing Perspectives on the Incident
However, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not shown enough understanding of the risks of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.
Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and initially challenged on the outer side on the uphill approach to the corner.
But he then cut back in an effort to get a advantage on Norris on the way out, only to hit the Sauber driver.
Driver Reactions After the Collision
The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what happened, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Lando. A shame."
His teammate commented: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back things happened and I just was unfortunate and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the middle."
Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."
"Piastri turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I cannot vanish."
"I had Fernando challenge on the inner side and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Oscar steered inward and the collision was unavoidable."
Aftermath and Team Response
McLaren will analyze the crash with their racers but not until the event weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on Saturday.
Stella said: "In general displeased but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a competitive place from our performance point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to compete, race normally and utilize our performance."
"The points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A bit more prudence would be good for all involved."
Championship Implications
The sprint event was taken by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and thirty-three behind of the Briton.
The team boss said: "The consequence is what the numbers show - we missed out on eight points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two strong racers. We look forward to just some normal racing."
Verstappen said he was taking the title race race by race.
