Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable 33-32 victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
