An esteemed Russian general has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The event happened on Monday morning when an bomb concealed beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
Investigators indicated that one possible explanation points to the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Scene of the Incident
Personnel have been dispatched to the location, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the capital.
Accounts indicate the detonation took place in a parking area adjacent to a residential building.
History of Incidents
Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military commanders have been targeted within Moscow.
This latest event follows other serious incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not publicly admitted as a matter of policy.
The war has witnessed clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
