Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup In Spite of Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran
Plans for Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and External Festivities
Local organizers have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. These events will take place around the Group G match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.
Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners
Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. Although it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of flags being seized.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s proud history of championing equality.
- An artistic competition has been commissioned to create images to commemorate the event.
- Planners are committed to making sure every visitor are welcomed in the city during the 48-team competition.
The region is home to a significant largest communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” organizers concluded.
