The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
