Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the recollections of Henry Creel. The search for a way out in episode 6 leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

The Discovery in the Cavern

After locating Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he struggles with the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
