In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract with the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The deal grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500K for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250K for placing in the top ten.
• An identical bonus for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent and grants him a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club get a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to represent the Chicago franchise, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 on February 2nd, joins a emerging lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, surpassing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His last year was limited to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with recording often, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing primarily at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the title match against the USA, he hit a game-tying shot in the second inning, helping Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is slated to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
