The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Squad
The English team has chosen a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter expected to be omitted if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five past matches.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers remains the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
